The Fade

The advent of the sweet-shooting big man—Laimbeer begat Olajuwon, Ewing and Robinson—has made this variation of the pick-and-roll, called the pick-and-pop, highly effective. Momentarily freed from his defender after setting a screen, Malone (the power forward, or 4 on the chart) "fades" to an open area, where he receives the pass from point guard Stockton (1) and takes an often uncontested jumper.
