Brett Heyl, Norwich, Vt.
Kayaking
Brett, 16, a member of the 18-and-under national slalom team, was the top qualifying junior at the senior team trials, finishing seventh in 5:35-49. A winner at the Nantahala, Ocoee and Black Water slalom races, he will compete in the Junior World Championships this summer.

Larry Frederick, New Bloomfield, Pa.
Baseball
Frederick, 60, the coach at West Perry High since 1961, retired after winning a 26th Division III Mid-Penn Conference title. In his career, he guided the Mustangs to two state crowns, a 57-game winning streak from 1979 to 1981 and an overall mark of 545-175.

Shannon Agee, Helena, Mont.
Track and Field
Shannon, a senior at Helena High, broke her own girls' national prep pole-vaulting record when she cleared 13'2" in a meet with Helena Capital High. A four-time Class AA state champion, her previous record was 13 feet. She will compete next year at Kansas.

Patrick Durkan, New York City
Fencing
Durkan, 19, became the youngest men's national saber champion when he defeated Keeth Smart of Brooklyn, 15-14. A freshman at Columbia, Durkan is a two-time National Junior Olympic titlist, a first-team All-America and is currently ranked No. 1 in the U.S. in men's saber.

Craig Broderson, Jacksonville
Rowing
Craig, a senior at Episcopal High, stroked the Eagles eight and coxed four to state crowns for the second consecutive year. He will lead Episcopal's coxed four in the Henley Royal Regatta this summer before joining the crew team at Boston University in the fall.

Devin McCalla, Richardson, Texas
Gymnastics
Devin, a senior at Pearce High, set state records on the vault and balance beam, and tied another on the floor exercise, to win the Texas girls' all-around title with a record score of 78.675. The national scholastic champion on the vault and uneven bars, she will compete at George Washington.
