Kentucky forward Heshimu Evans (right) starts every game with five personals (I, me, he, him, she) that can be made up from his first name. That's no reason for you to prematurely pronounce Evans, much less the defending champion Wildcats, out. Despite losing four of its final seven regular-season games, Kentucky rebounded to win the SEC tournament and looks poised for a Meet Me in St. Louis Midwest Regional semifinal matchup on Friday against Utah, which would be a replay of last year's tide game. The tournament's best regional also offers a potential Sweet 16 duel, which also would take place on Friday, between point guards Mateen Cleaves of Michigan State and Jason Terry of Arizona.

In the 24 years since the WTA's computerized rankings system was implemented, only eight women have been No. 1 on the tour. From that octet, four ( Lindsay Davenport, Steffi Graf, current queen of the court Martina Hingis and Monica Seles) were entered in this Indian Wells, Calif., tournament, which takes its name from a fifth. All four have won here, and an all-No. 1 final was a strong possibility. An 18-year-old beady-haired player who looks to be No. 1 someday was not entered in the singles here, but her younger sister, Serena, was.

Evander Holyfield vs. Lennox Lewis

Meriwether Lewis had Clark. Jerry Lewis had Martin. Even Shari Lewis had Lamb Chop. Many a Lewis is best remembered as half of a pair. Not so WBC heavyweight champ Lennox. He has a devastating overhand right but, after 35 pro bouts (34-1, 27 KOs), no foil of note. That changes tonight in Madison Square Garden as the 33-year-old erstwhile Canadian clubber (who now fights out of England) faces courageous and canny IBF and WBA champ Holyfield (36-3, 25 KOs) in a bout that will unify the heavyweight title for the first time since 1992.

On March 4 Philadelphia's rookie goalie, Jean-Marc Pelletier, marked his 21st birthday by being treated to some lethal shots—slap shots, wrist shots, wraparounds. He made his pro debut that night against the Eastern Conference—leading Senators, surrendered five goals and most likely awoke the next day with a case of the bed spins. No word yet on whether Pelletier will get a shot at redemption against Dallas, at week's end owner of the NHL's best record (40-12-10). If Philly, through Sunday winless in seven straight despite having two of the league's top goal scorers ( left wing John LeClair, with 38, and center Eric Lindros, with 37), sobers up, this is a likely Stanley Cup finals matchup.

Lakers at Timberwolves

This week's Lake Show guest-stars Minnesota forward Kevin Garnett, who proves that you can be too rich and too thin. The fourth-year forward has a $126 million contract and just 220 pounds on his 6'11" frame. Garnett's double-double (19.9 points, 10.7 rebounds) average through Sunday and the improved play of third-year point guard Stephon Marbury were the two main reasons that the T-Wolves were 7-1 at home.
