Alabama , journeying to the Left Coast in the regular season for the first time in 22 years, appears headed in the right direction. The SEC champs, No. 3 in SI's preseason rankings, invade the Rose Bowl sparked by David Palmer imitator Freddie Milons at wideout-returner and linebacker Saleem Rasheed, who last fall became the first true freshman to lead 'Bama in tackles (84).

Tight end Frank Wycheck has led Tennessee in receptions in each of the past four seasons. However, it was Wycheck's overhand lateral to Kevin Dyson on a kickoff return with the Titans trailing the Bills 16-15 in the waning seconds of last January's AFC wild-card game that will seal his legacy. Dyson scored, and Tennessee waltzed all the way to the Super Bowl. Tonight before a revenge-hungry throng at Ralph Wilson Stadium , would it be rubbing it in for Tennessee to pull the same stunt on its first kickoff return of the 2000 season?

For two weeks each year in New York City , racketeering takes a backseat to racket-cheering, and CBS , which has plumbed Queens male stereotypes with All in the Family, Everybody Loves Raymond and The King of Queens, gives women equal time in this borough. It's fitting, since this is the only Grand Slam tennis event that gives the sexes equal financial awards.

Last year Denver went from champ to chump quicker than a certain Tagi Tribe member recently went from Richard to rich. The Broncos began the 1999 season 0-4, a losing streak that culminated with 1998 league MVP Terrell Davis 's being felled by a torn right anterior cruciate ligament. That blow undermined the two-time defending Super Bowl champs the way internecine voting alliances torpedoed the nonsurvivors on Survivor. St. Louis leapt into the void, supplanting the Broncs as champs behind quarterback Kurt Warner (above), who succeeded Davis as MVP. Meanwhile, we're curious as to how welcome a fellow named (Dennis) Miller will be in the stronghold of Anheuser-Busch .
