COLLEGE BASEBALL—USC defeated defending champion Arizona State 10-3 to win its 11th NCAA College World Series in Omaha. PRO BASKETBALL—Just two days after the Washington Bullets won their first NBA title, beating the Seattle SuperSonics 105-99 in the seventh and final game of the NBA championship series (page 70), the league held its college draft in New York. Portland, picking first and seventh in the first round, chose 6'10" Minnesota center MYCHAL THOMPSON and RON BREWER, a 6'4" guard from Arkansas. Kansas City, picking second, landed North Carolina Guard PHIL FORD. Indiana selected Kentucky's RICK ROBEY, a 6'10" center forward. The New York Knicks chose 6'5" Montana Guard MIKE RICHARDSON. Boston, which also had two first-round picks, gambled on 6'9" Indiana State Forward LARRY BIRD, who is eligible for the draft but may play his final year of college ball, then chose Guard FREEMAN WILLIAMS, who led the country in scoring two years in a row at Portland State. Atlanta, picking 10th and 16th, selected Marquette's BUTCH LEE and 6'4" Forward JACK GIVENS of Kentucky. BOXING—LARRY HOLMES took the WBC heavyweight title away from Ken Norton, winning a 15-round split decision in Las Vegas (page 20). On the same card, CARLOS ZARATE of Mexico retained his WBC bantamweight crown with a fourth-round knockout of Emilio Hernandez of Venezuela. GOLF—NANCY LOPEZ shot a 13-under-par 275 to win the $150,000 LPGA Championship at Mason, Ohio. Lopez is the fourth golfer in history to win four LPGA tournaments in a row (page 22). Andy Bean made a 35-foot birdie putt on the first extra hole to beat Lee Trevino and win his second straight tournament, the $250,000 Danny Thomas- Memphis Golf Classic. HORSE RACING—AFFIRMED, Steve Cauthen up, won the $184,300 Belmont Stakes by a head over Alydar and thus the Triple Crown (page 16). Caesar's Wish, ridden by Danny Wright, won the $81,000 Mother Goose Stakes for 3-year-old fillies at Belmont. MOTOR SPORTS—The team of DIDIER PIRONI and JEAN-PIERRE JAUSSAUD drove a turbocharged Renault A442B a record 3,134.5 miles to win the 24 Hours of Le Mans. SOCCER—Surprising Austria advanced to the second round of World Cup competition, beating Sweden 1-0 on a penalty kick by Johann Krankl. Pre-tournament favorite Brazil struggled to a scoreless tie with Spain but also qualified for the second round. Argentina and Italy were the first to qualify, the Argentinians beating France 2-1, while Italy scored two goals in the last minute to down Hungary 3-1. Poland advanced by beating stubborn Tunisia 1-0 and Mexico 3-1. West Germany raced to a 4-0 halftime lead to defeat Mexico 6-0, then tied Tunisia 0-0. Peru held the Netherlands to a 0-0 tie but both teams qualified (page 24). NASL: The league's two hottest teams, Portland and San Diego, each won two games to pad their winning streaks. The Timbers beat Los Angeles 1-0 on a Jimmy Conway goal and Seattle by the same score in a shootout, stretching Portland's streak to eight and tying an NASL record. San Diego won its sixth straight, 4-3 over Memphis, and earlier beat Philadelphia 3-2 as Jean Willrich scored two goals. Minnesota blanked California 1-0 as Alan Willey scored his 10th goal in the last nine games. Houston defeated Washington 1-0, with Houston's Keith Van Eron getting his league-leading sixth shutout.
