WHO'S Hot

White
Beyond Dodgers billionaire Matt White (page 17), Bucs end Dewayne White (left) got $29 million from the Lions, the White Sox crushed their rival Cubs 13--2 (it's only spring, but the South Side celebrates), and the White Stripes are back: with an album called Icky Thump.

Sabres
It's not how you feel (eight injured Sabres missed time last week) or how you look (see poll, below), it's how you play! Buffalo, a conference finalist last year, had won 11 of 13 to soar into first place overall. Said winger Daniel Briere, "It's amazing."

Shani
Speedskater Shani Davis set the world record in the 1,500 meters and, perhaps recalling his feud with fellow skater Chad Hedrick at last year's Olympics, refused to crow, saying, "I just want to skate."

Kentucky Derby
Buzz for the race got started with wins by Scat Daddy and other contenders, who might get an audience with a queen: The U.S. Secret Service says that Elizabeth II is "probable" for Churchill Downs on May 5.

WHO'S Not

Red
In a game versus B.C., the Sox saw an Eagles punter smack Dice-K's first pitch for a double—and new closer Joel Pineiro is struggling. The Wings fell to so-so Colorado. And while the Bucks' Michael Redd (above) went for 52 points, he lost and said, "I don't think it's good for me to score 50."

Oilers
How they feel (lousy after losing favorite son Ryan Smyth, page 82) is how they play. Last season's Stanley Cup finalists had lost eight of 10 to drop out of playoff contention. Said coach Craig MacTavish, "We're having a tough time winning."

Giulianis
Duke's stud sophomore golfer Andrew (right)—he has a two handicap and plans to go pro—says he won't campaign for dad Rudolph, the G.O.P. front-runner (and Yankees fan), because the two are estranged.

Kentucky's Smith
Wildcats coach Tubby Smith's job seemed shaky—his athletic director said fans are "disappointed" with the 20--10 team—even before Sunday's loss to Florida. That made it five losses in seven games. Said Smith, "It's frustrating."
