O.K. WITHOUT O.J.
North College Hill ( Cincinnati) figured to struggle after losing O.J. Mayo, who transferred to Huntington (W.Va.), and Bill Walker, who enrolled at Kansas State. But after opening the season with four losses in five games, the Trojans finished 17--7 and surged to their third straight Ohio Division III hoops title last Saturday with a 50--45 win over Liberty-Benton ( Findlay). "No one gave us a chance," coach Jamie Mahaffey says. "We weren't ranked in the state and we weren't even ranked in the city." Damon Butler (above), who scored 20, was named the tournament's outstanding player.

WAIT TILL NEXT YEAR
Duke had an ugly one-and-done in the NCAA basketball tournament, but at least its incoming recruits found postseason success. Taylor King, a 6'8" forward and future Blue Devil, had 29 points and 15 rebounds as Mater Dei (Santa Ana) took the California Division II title last Friday. Two weeks earlier forward Kyle Singler, another Duke recruit, led South Medford to an Oregon 6A title.

BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB
Here's equality of the sexes: Oregon-Davis (Hamlet) took Indiana basketball titles this year in boys' and girls' basketball, the first school in the state ever to do so. The girls beat Wood Memorial ( Oakland City) 54--46 for the Class A title, and the boys later took down Barr-Reeve ( Montgomery) 63--52.

NUMBERS GAME
To say that senior Mary Kathryn Govero (left) is the best basketball player in her class isn't saying much: There are only 11 seniors at Mount Salus Christian Academy, a private school in Clinton, Miss. But in fact she's the best scorer in her state—ever. Her 5,015 career points is a record. The 5'11" guard is headed to Mississippi State.
