JUST A KICK AWAY
Plano West came oh-so-close to sweeping the Texas 5A soccer championships last weekend. The girls' team, led by championship MVP Lauren LaGro (right), suffocated Deer Park in a 3--0 win, not allowing a shot on goal. On the boys' side West took undefeated favorite Marcus ( Flower Mound , Texas ) to an overtime shootout before senior Sam Garza, Marcus's fifth shooter, scored for the 3--2 final.

STREAK BUSTED
Mount Hebron ( Ellicott City , Md.) equaled the longest winning streak in girls' lacrosse history, but couldn't quite break it. After winning 103 games in a row, tying an unofficial mark set by Loch Raven ( Baltimore ) in 1982, Mount Hebron fell at home to 6--0 West Genesee (Camillus, N.Y. ), a perennial power, by the stunningly decisive score of 14--6. Mount Hebron also has a national record streak of 10 consecutive state titles.

GETTING WEALTHIER

First Virginia Commonwealth upset Duke in the NCAA basketball tournament, now VCU has added a key recruit. Guard Ed Nixon (left) of Lakewood High ( St. Petersburg ), who was all-state in Class 5A, became the fifth player from Florida to declare for the Rams . VCU 's first-year coach, Anthony Grant , is a former University of Florida assistant.

BROTHER-SISTER ACT
Gray days are ahead at Gonzaga—and that's good. The school had already locked up Steven Gray, a 6'4" guard from Bainbridge ( Bainbridge Island , Wash.) High who was the state's 3A player of the year, and on April 10 his sister, a sophomore, gave a verbal commitment to the Bulldogs. Brittany, a 5'11" forward who had tagged along with Steven on his official visit last September, averaged a team-high 16.1 points this year.
