The Dodgers, a contender in need of some pop, could use Cardinals third baseman Scott Rolen (right) in their lineup. Dealing a major part of a championship nucleus would be a bold move, but St. Louis, 16--25 and 9 1/2 games out in the NL Central through Sunday, might be primed for a shakeup (plus, Rolen has an uneasy relationship with manager Tony La Russa).... Devil Rays second baseman B.J. Upton was so impressive during his spring tryout in centerfield—"He was like Willie Mays," gushed one team executive—that incumbent Rocco Baldelli is a trade candidate. Tampa Bay needs to get the injury-prone Baldelli healthy first.... Owner George Steinbrenner is so upset by the Yankees' play (19--23, including a weekend-series loss to the Mets) that he apparently will take away G.M. Brian Cashman's say over who will be the team's next manager. Bench coach Don Mattingly, a Steinbrenner favorite, is the most likely successor to Joe Torre. The Boss is displeased by what he sees as a lack of motivation and Torre's questionable pitching decisions.
