Won
By Bode Miller
(below), the 27th World Cup race of his career—the downhill at
the Lauberhorn course in Wengen, Switzerland
, on Sunday. The victory tied
Miller with Phil Mahre for the most by an American on the Cup circuit. Miller
,
30, broke away from the U.S.
ski team last May and is competing as an
independent; the win at Wengen was his second title this season. "It didn't
feel that good in terms of the quality of the skiing, but I was very
aggressive," said Miller
. "I kept really pushing forward the whole
time."
Sentenced
To six months in prison, sprinter Marion Jones
. In October the former Olympic
gold medalist, 31, pleaded guilty to lying to federal investigators about her
use of performance-enhancing drugs and her knowledge of a check-fraud scheme
involving former boyfriend Tim Montgomery
. Last Friday, Judge Kenneth Karas
gave her the maximum sentence under her plea deal, to send a message to other
athletes who use drugs. Said Jones
, who must report to prison by March 11,
"I truly hope that people will learn from my mistakes."
Benched
By his teammates for Sunday's game against the Hawks, Bulls
rookie Joakim Noah
,
as punishment for verbally abusing assistant coach Ron Adams during practice
last Friday. Noah
reportedly upbraided Adams after being criticized for not
knowing an assignment. Coach Jim Boylan
benched Noah
for that night's game
against the 76ers
, but in a players-only meeting on Saturday the team voted to
sit him again. "A coach-player relationship is built to get a little
volatile," said center Ben Wallace
, "but it should never go to that
level."
Ruled
Ineligible to compete in this year's Olympics by the IAAF, double-amputee
sprinter Oscar Pistorius
(below). The South African
, who runs on carbon-fiber
blades and holds Paralympic world records in the 100, 200 and 400 meters,
competed twice last year against able-bodied athletes: He was second in a
400-meter heat at the Rome
Golden Gala and was disqualified in the 400 at the
Norwich Union British Grand Prix. In its ruling on Monday the IAAF said
Pistorius, 21, gains a mechanical advantage from his prosthetics. "That's a
huge blow," said his manager, Peet Van Zyl. "It looks like he is out of
any able-bodied event."
Launched
By Major League Baseball
, a department of investigations that will probe future
allegations and rumors of performance-enhancing drug use. The unit will be
headed by Dan Mullin, a former New York City
police officer who had been
baseball's senior director of security. The formation of the department was
recommended by George Mitchell
in his steroid report last month. Commissioner
Bud Selig said a tip line for team employees to report drug use will also be
established and that tighter security measures for big league clubhouses will
be implemented.
Died
At age 40 of a possible drug overdose, former U.S.
figure skating champion
Christopher Bowman
(right). The skater's body was found by a friend in a Los
Angeles motel last Thursday; toxicology results were pending. "His friend
told me that [he was] fine," Bowman's mother, Joyce, told the Detroit Free
Press. "He just went to bed and didn't wake up." Known as Bowman the
Showman for his outsized personality, he won U.S.
men's figure skating titles
in 1989 and '92. Bowman also battled cocaine and alcohol addiction, undergoing
treatment before he went to the 1988 Olympics and after his fourth-place finish
at the Albertville
Games in '92.
Fired
By Hawaii
, athletics director Herman Frazier
, a day after football coach June
Jones resigned to take the same job at SMU. Jones
stepped down on Jan. 7; in an
e-mail to Frazier
that was published by The Honolulu Advertiser
, he explained
that his departure was spurred by his frustration with Hawaii
's small budget
and poor facilities. In addition to his failure to re-sign Jones
, Frazier
had
been criticized for not accepting a full allotment of tickets to this year's
Sugar Bowl
, creating a shortage for Warriors
supporters, and for weakening the
team's schedule with two Division I-AA
opponents this season. Associate AD Carl
Clapp was named acting AD until a replacement for Frazier
is hired.
