Chopping Timber
Going up for a rebound, Timberwolves forward Craig Smith suffered the
boardinghouse reach of Celtics forward Leon Powe (0) last Friday in
Minneapolis. Powe hit a layup at the buzzer and scored 16 points in Boston's
88--86 victory.
Fit to Be Tied
Steve Lowery flipped his putter after narrowly missing a 40-foot birdie on the
18th hole in Pebble Beach, Calif., on Sunday—a shot that would also have most
likely sealed his third career victory. Moments later Vijay Singh birdied 18 to
send the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am to a playoff, which Lowery won
on the first hole (inset). At 47, he was the oldest champ in the 71-year
history of the tournament.
No-Look Save
In a blink, Manchester City goalkeeper Joe Hart thwarted a first-half shot by
Manchester United striker Carlos Tevez on Sunday at United's Old Trafford.
Before the match there was a tribute on the 50th anniversary of the plane crash
that killed eight United players and three team officials. Afterward, City
celebrated a 2--1 victory and its first sweep of the season series since
1970.
