CAN YOU SPARE A DIME?
AFTER YEARS of secrecy, Penn State coach JOE PATERNO's salary is made public. And he might be the best bargain in sports. The 81-year-old coach (left) made just a little more than his base salary of $512,000 in '07, which seems paltry in comparison to the compensation package of the highest-paid coach (and historian), Alabama's Nick Saban, who made $4 million.

HEP, HEP HOORAY
INSPIRED BY the memory of late coach TERRY HOEPPNER, Indiana gets an emotional, 27-24 victory against rival Purdue in the regular-season finale and secures its first bowl berth since '93. The Hoosiers lose 49-33 to Oklahoma State in the Insight Bowl (below).

BITTERSWEET ENDING
ON DEC. 1 the 70-year-old Orange Bowl hosts its final college football game, a 38-19 Florida International win over North Texas. The longtime home of the Miami Hurricanes, the stadium was left without a full-time tenant when the Hurricanes decided to move their home games to Dolphin Stadium. The Orange Bowl is scheduled to be demolished in '08.
