Four years later another second-year coach and his senior quarterback pulled off a similar upset. That probably didn't surprise Lubick, who in six years had never beaten Meyer in golf until one afternoon, when they walked onto the 18th tee with Lubick well ahead. "I was four strokes up on him," says Lubick, wistfully. "It was going to be the first time I ever beat him." His voice trails off.

"I started thinking about how much fun it was going to be razzing him. But he somehow got into my head. I still can't believe it, but he found a way to beat me."
