Darryl Strawberry (left) and the Mets closed in on the Pirates, first with a Buc-breaking homer by the Straw—celebrated by Dave Magadan (below)—and later with Frank Viola 's nine-strikeout virtuoso performance against the Phillies. When the Pirates were swept in Montreal , the Mets trailed by a half game and even the Expos were back in the race.

AL EAST
A ninth-inning, game-winning home run by Kelly Gruber (near right) last Saturday helped Toronto score a dramatic SkyDome sweep of Baltimore , with the Blue Jays winning all three games in their last at bat. Meanwhile in Chicago , Boston manager Joe Morgan (below) watched Dana Kiecker and the Red Sox staff lose four in a row to the White Sox . That left Toronto just one game back and Boston 's Mike Greenwell looking disconsolate.
