"One of the things he said was that he loved the competition but not the daily grind," she said. "I feel the same way."

By Russia for the first time since 1993, the world hockey championship, with a 5--4 overtime win over Canada in Quebec City on Sunday. Canada , which had never before hosted the tournament, was bidding to become the first host country to win the title since 1986; the loss broke a 17-game winning streak for the Canadians. "We are the champions of the world, and it feels so great," Russia 's Alexander Ovechkin said. "It's really special to win here because this is ... a hockey-mad country."

According to a civil complaint filed on May 14 by the casino, the TNT analyst and former NBA star received four $100,000 markers last Oct. 18 and 19 and "despite repeated demands ... has refused to repay the $400,000." Clark County district attorney David Roger said Barkley will face charges if he doesn't make good on the debt. Barkley , 45, has been open about his casino gambling; in 2006 he estimated that he had lost about $10 million over the years. "My mistake," Barkley said last week while playing a pro-am golf tournament in Hoover, Ala. "I'm not broke, and I'm going to take care of it."

Transferred
To Jackson State , former LSU backup quarterback Ryan Perrilloux , who was kicked off the team by Tigers coach Les Miles earlier this month. A highly touted prospect when he arrived at LSU in 2006, Perrilloux , 21, was suspended three times over the past year for off-the-field incidents. If he had transferred to another Division I-A team he would have had to sit out next season, but since Jackson State is in the Football Championship Subdivision, he will immediately compete for the Gamecocks' starting job. "I think he's been an immature player, and I think he's been a very, very, very frustrated player," coach Jack Crowe said.

For three days to honor the victims of the May 12 earthquake in China , the Olympic torch relay. On Sunday, six days after a quake in China 's Sichuan province that killed 50,000 people, the Beijing Olympic organizing committee said the relay would be halted during a national mourning period that began on Monday. On Sunday pistol shooter Wu Xiaoxuan, who in 1984 became the first Chinese woman to win an Olympic gold medal, carried the torch through the city of Hangzhou in Zhejiang province and then donated $70,000, collected from other torchbearers, to earthquake relief efforts. The relay was to resume in the Zhejiang city of Ningbo on Thursday.

Died
At age 39, former NFL center Curtis Whitley. On May 14, Pecos County, Texas , police said Whitley had been found by friends dead in his trailer home in Fort Stockton; police said there was no sign of foul play and the death was still under investigation. Whitley, who played for the Chargers, Panthers and Raiders from 1992 through '97, was suspended twice for violating the NFL 's drug policy, and in 1994 he underwent treatment at the Betty Ford Center. In the 1997 book Year of the Cat, a recap of Carolina's '96 season, Whitley told authors Scott Fowler and Charles Chandler that he had been a frequent user of crystal methamphetamine.
