West Alabama 's Tonya Butler was thought to be the first woman to make a field goal in a college football game, helping her male teammates to a 24-17 win over Stillman College Saturday. Butler, a 5-5 140-pound senior, kicked a 27-yard field goal with 9:41 left in the first quarter gave the Division II Tigers a 3-0 lead. The 23-year-old from Fayetteville , Ga., went on to kick extra points in the second, third and fourth quarters. Butler is 7 for 7 on extra point tries this year. Butler transferred from Middle Georgia Junior College, where West Alabama head coach Randy Pippen was head coach. Jim Wright , director of statistics for the NCAA , said he could not confirm Butler was the first female to score a college field goal because NCAA statistics do not differentiate between males and females. On Aug. 31, Katie Hnida became the first woman to score in a Division IA game when she kicked two extra points for New Mexico in a 72-8 win over Texas State-San Marcos. On Aug. 31, 2001, Ashley Martin booted a perfect point-after kick in Division I AA Jacksonville State 's opening game to become the first woman to play -- and score -- in a Division I football game.
