Relief Efforts

Rockies, Giants, Royals turn to new closers -- again

Atlanta Braves : Danny Kolb has been sharper lately. Remember the Braves are usually best in the heat of summer. Those save opps with be coming to someone.

Chicago Cubs : Joe Borowski has looked good in his rehab and is ready to return. If -- for some reason -- he's still on the waiver wire, it's time to get him. He won't be there in a couple of days.

Cincinnati Reds : Danny Graves is at 16.91 P/IP. At least the fans are getting their money's worth. Remember, Ryan Wagner doesn't get the gig until Graves has some other steady job. I think nothing short of a trade would make Wagner the closer, and there isn't much demand for Graves .

Colorado Rockies : Chin-Hui Tsao is on the DL with shoulder trouble. I don't like the looks of this. While a team with 10 wins probably won't create that many save opps, pick up Brian Fuentes is he's available. Hey, a save's a save.

Florida Marlins : Todd Jones is closing in Florida . Does that sound right to anyone? Guillermo Mota might be back soon. See if you can get him for cheap from a scared owner.

Los Angeles Dodgers : Eric Gagne is back and Yhency Brazoban gave up some earned runs on Sunday. Brazoban may emerge as a great vulture, so don't dump him yet.

New York Mets : Braden Looper responded to pressure and has been getting the job done. When the Mets wake up and realize they can't compete this year, expect them to experiment with the closer job.

San Francisco Giants : OK, check under your seats. If there's an autographed picture of Armando Benitez taped to your chair, then it's your turn to try closing for the Giants . Right now, the guy with the job is "Luke" Ty Walker (say that one out loud; you'll get it). My editor maintains that these guys are keeping the mound warm until David Aardsma gets called up. If you have the space, reserve Aardsma.

St. Louis Cardinals : Did you flinch like I did when that comebacker was headed for Jason Isringhausen on Sunday? He's fine. Just remember Al Reyes the next time Isringhausen gets hurt.

Baltimore Orioles : I worry about B.J. Ryan . His team has 24 wins, and he has 21 appearances. He hasn't given up an ER in May, but that could catch up to him. I'm not saying to trade him, but keep an eye out for any signs of wear and tear.
